The RS America is a lightened, limited edition, performance-oriented version of the two-wheel drive Porsche 911 (964). For the 20th anniversary of the 1973 911 Carrera RS, Porsche decided to build the 964 Carrera RS, which, like the original RS, was a racing 911 variant certified for street use. Thanks to the efforts of Vic Elford and a team from Porsche Cars North America a US compliant version was made for the American market. This special edition was given the name RS America and slotted in above the Carrera 2 in the Porsche model lineup.
A total of 701 RS Americas were built with 617 being 1993 models and, due to a higher volume of orders then expected, a final 84 were released as 1994 models. The RS America featured a distinctive "Whale-Tail" spoiler, a partially stripped interior with flat door panels (from the European RS) and carpeting along with a luggage shelf replacing the rear seats. Cloth covered sports seats, 17 inch wheels, and M030 Sports Suspension (which included the use of much of the running gear from the 911 C2 Turbo) were fitted as standard. The logo "RS America" was written on the deck lid along with an "RS" logo in front of the rear wheels. Deleted to save weight were power steering, cruise control, powered side mirrors, air-conditioning, sunroof and radio, although the air-conditioning, sunroof and radio as well as a limited slip differential could be ordered as options.
This particular RS America is the 646th car from a limited run of 701. It was originally finished on October 25th, 1993 and first registered on April 7th, 1994. This car come from factory in Black paint along with the optional radio, A/C with Full Climate Control, and electric sunroof. The car has been meticulously cared for the past 26 years. During this period, it has received multiple inspections and maintenance services, ensuring the longevity of this special 911.
Upon the arrival of the RS to Canepa, it was completely inspected, serviced, and detailed-top to bottom. This was made easier by the care and maintenance of its previous owners.
The RS America is a truly remarkable car. Porsche said it was “for drivers who demand an even higher level of feedback – feedback so detailed, so precise that it usually found only in racing cars. In a Porsche RS model, refinements in the suspension, steering, wheels and tires all work in combination with perfectly coordinated weight reduction to create a dramatically different driving feel.” Now ready for its next owner to enjoy the rewarding and rare experience of driving an RS America, this example will be sure to leave you with wanting to drive more and experience Porsche’s RS for America.
