To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fabled 1973 911 Carrera RS, Porsche introduced the 964 Carrera RS, albeit for European market distribution only. Like the original RS, the 964 RS was in essence a racing 911 certified for the street.
Thanks to the efforts of Vic Elford and a team from Porsche Cars North America, a U.S. compliant version was finally made available for the American market. This lightened, limited edition, performance-oriented version of the two-wheel-drive 911 was highly anticipated by Porsche Club of America members, and sold out upon delivery.
A total of 701 RS Americas were produced starting in February 1992, with the final 84 examples manufactured starting August 1993, as 1994 year models. The RS America featured a distinctive "Whale-Tail" rear spoiler, a partially stripped interior with flat door panels, and lightweight carpeting along with a luggage shelf replacing the rear seats. Cloth covered sports seats, 17 inch wheels, and M030 Sport Suspension were fitted as standard. An "RS America" emblem was affixed to the rear deck lid along with an "RS" decal in front of the rear wheel arches. Deleted to save weight were power steering, cruise control, powered side mirrors, air-conditioning, sunroof and a radio, although the air-conditioning, sunroof and radio, as well as a limited slip differential could be ordered as the only available options.
Ordered in Black, with Black cloth interior, and optioned with a radio, air conditioning, and an electric sunroof, this particular RS America is one of the 84 cars from the final year of production. It was completed on October 25, 1993, and delivered new by Porsche Scottsdale, AZ on March 31, 1994.
Upon arriving at Canepa, it was thoroughly inspected both cosmetically and mechanically, providing evidence that this RS America had enjoyed a charmed life. From its outstanding overall condition, showing little to no wear, and superb overall level of mechanical preparation, all confirming that previous ownership had been respectful of the cars historical significance. The RS was then treated to a fastidious concours-level detail, which included removal of the factory cosmoline on the underside, revealing original finishes in pristine condition. Now ready for display on any Porsche Club of America show field, this RS America is equally ready to delight the purists who enjoy driving their 911’s on backroads.
The RS America is a truly remarkable car. Porsche noted it was “for drivers who demand an even higher level of feedback – feedback so detailed, so precise that it is usually found only in racing cars. In a Porsche RS model, refinements in the suspension, steering, wheels and tires all work in combination with perfectly coordinated weight reduction to create a dramatically different driving feel.”
