The Carrera RS is one of the most revered cars in the Porsche lineage, and is regarded as one of the finest sports cars of the 1970’s, and maybe all time! Revealed at the 1972 Paris Auto Show, it was a factory car specially built to meet the homologation rules of FIA Group 4 racing. The RS ("Rennsport") was almost invincible at Le Mans, Daytona and the Targa Florio, often winning outright against pure racing prototypes. It’s not often you would see the same car on the podium one day, and passing you on the open road the next. The 911 RS is conclusive proof that one of Porsche’s greatest skills was building a car that was immensely competitive at the track, and yet equally competent as a street car.
Porsche had only intended to produce 500 Carrera RS examples, set on making just enough to homologate the RS to go racing. These “1st series” cars are highly coveted, sporting thinner sheet metal from the factory and were focused on being lightweight, offering a “purer” experience. However, the automotive public’s appetite for the Carrera RS platform meant that Porsche ultimately made 2 more rounds of cars, producing a further 1,080 examples. These later versions (often referred to as series 2, or series 3 cars) had thicker sheet metal, and were generally heavier than their 1st series siblings.
This highly original 911 Carrera RS, #479, was specified as a 472 model that is part of the 1st series. Delivered new to Germany on January 1st 1973 the first owner would immediately import the car to Italy where the Carrera RS would stay until 1997. After 24 years, the vehicle was bought and shipped to Germany where it spent over 2 decades until it was imported back to Italy in 2019.
Prior to its arrival here at Canepa this RS underwent a major service by Porsche in Padua, Italy in August 2021 . The engine was completely rebuilt.
In October 2021, the vehicle was officially appraised in Italy by the Studio Tecnico Di Infortunistica where after looking over every facet of the car as well the history of the RS, they deemed this specific ’73 Carrera RS to be exemplary. With an interior and exterior in prestine condition and all other components showing meticulous care, the appraiser dared to call this the definition of a masterpiece.
Upon arriving at Canepa, regardless of how amazing the vehicle may be, they are always subjected to our Canepa Difference process—this is to ensure that nothing is missed. After a personal test drive by Bruce Canepa, the RS was looked over by our team of Porsche experts and brought to the highest level of mechanical and cosmetic condition while maintaining its preserved quality. This is your moment to obtain a piece of Porsche history, a stunning 1973 911 Carrera RS from the 1st Series!
