Built by Chevrolet on March, 13th 1965, this Sting Ray was sold new on April 1st 1965 at Brackin Chevrolet in Linderwood, North Dakota to Donald M. Wohlwend of Seattle, Washington.
It was ordered in rally red paint with the 350 hp V8 engine, 4-speed manual transmission, telescopic steering wheel, positraction axle 370R, quick take off wheels, inside no-glare mirror, back up lamps, am/fm radio, and transistor ignition. All these options would raise the cost of the Coupe from the base price of $4321.00 to a final sticker number of $5,423.70.
The Corvette would spend the next few decades in the care of Mr. Wohlwend in Seattle. He kept all of the original sales paper work, registrations from 1965-1987, window sticker, protect-o-plate, even his original Sting Ray brochure and gas receipt from the '60s-'70s. From the condition of these records, and of the car itself we can safely assume Mr. Wohlwend was a meticulous type of person when it came to his cars. After his long-term ownership the Corvette was in the possession of a couple of collectors in Washington State who safely guarded the car's originality and condition.
The January 1965 issue of Car and Driver, which comes with the car, boldly states that the 1965 350hp Sting Ray was ready and able to take on the best GTs in the world, handily calling out Ferrari and Aston Martin. Only after taking this car for a drive can you fully understand their stance. By 1965 the new Sting Ray was fully sorted out and true world-beater. This survivor car is amazingly as tight as the day it rolled off the line, without a rattle or a squeak. It starts on the first crank. In fact, we are hard pressed to find any fault with this time capsule Corvette.
Bruce Canepa calls this car "The best original example I've ever come across in my life. The care in which this car was kept speaks for itself. It sets a new benchmark. All that, and it is an absolute dream to drive."
