The exclusive 356C Carrera 2 Cabriolet, which only 28 are believed to have been built from 1964-1965, is one of the rarest Porsche road cars. The crown jewel of the Carrera 2 resided in the engine bay, with a two-liter engine paired with 4 camshafts. This now famous upgrade pumped power up from a regular 356's mere 95 horsepower to a staggering 130 horsepower from the factory. Unsurprisingly, when the Carrera 2 Cabriolet was offered for sale, it commanded a 30% premium over the regular 356 convertibles, coming in at a base price of around $6,220 in 1964.
This particular Carrera 2 Cabriolet was finished at the Porsche factory on May 5th, 1964. It would then be imported to the United States from Germany in 1976 by then owner, Lieutenant Colonel Fromm of Hartford, Connecticut, who was stationed in Germany.
Fromm would then put the car up for sale in 1977, and would find a new owner with Rick Cool of Fairfax, Virginia. He would only own the car for a short while before the Cabriolet would move on to Rusty Ferrell of Utah in 1982. Familiar with Carrera 2s after owning a few examples, he set out to restore the Cabriolet. Around 1989 the Cab would be sold to a European owner.
The next appearance of 160232 would be at Christie's auction in Tarrytown, New York on June 15th, 1996 where the Cabriolet would sell for $134,500. In 2013, after a couple of owners, the car would be subjected to a top-level, exacting and concours quality restoration here at Canepa.
The Cabriolet was stripped down to its bare tub and installed on a rotisserie. Every system on the car was broken down to the smallest nut and bolt. Over the course of the next few years the Cabriolet was painstakingly restored. Piece by individual piece, all of the components were rebuilt to factory specification. Every mechanical piece receiving its period correct plating and nothing was overlooked. From brakes and suspension to the fuel and steering systems, every element was restored to its proper and correct spec. No system was left untouched, including every instrument being rebuilt along with the rare in-dash thermometer.
The interior was completely recovered, new hand-cut carpet was laid down, and every facet was done completely in-house at Canepa. Each piece of the interior was made via a custom template that we created by hand. The transaxle was rebuilt with new bearings, seals, bushings, and gaskets. Now that the car was approaching completion, the amazing 4-cam engine was refitted to the car. Having been completely rebuilt, the robust 2.0 liter marvel was now putting out 160 horsepower at 7,000 rpm.
After thousands of hours of labor this slate grey beauty is now one of the finest Carrera 2s in existence, and you could be the next owner of one of Porsche's finest and rarest automobiles
