This stunning Porsche 356 SC was purchased new by Joseph Tengler and his wife Charlotte (Charlie) on March, 24 1964 at the Omaha Volkswagen dealership in Nebraska just before Joe finished dental school. The original window sticker shows that the car was listed at $4,815.00, but Joe and Charlie decided to add a few accessories such as a Sapphire II radio by Bendix for $132.50, chrome wheels for $80.00 and a set of seat belts for $12.90. Out the door, Joe and Charlie paid $5,043.40, which was a lot of money in the mid 60s. They traded in their 1959 Volkswagen bug and never looked back. They registered the car in California in Charlie’s name as she was a California resident, as they were planning to move back to California.

Although the car was purchased in Omaha Nebraska, it spent a short time there before it was driven 1500 miles to Long Beach, California so Joe could take his boards to become a dentist. Joe purchased a dental practice in the Imperial Valley where he and Charlie started a family. The family quickly increased from two to five in just three short years, with two sons riding in the back seat and a daughter riding in the front on Charlie’s lap. Finally, the Tengler family outgrew the small car and it became a daily driver for Dr. Tengler to drive back and forth to his dental practice.

Dr. Tengler would pass away in the 90s, and the car was put in the care of his son Eric. As a tribute to his father and his many years with the family car, Eric gave the car to Ted Blake of Sacramento CA, a Porsche purist and 356 expert, to be fully restored. Over the next 8 years the car would go through a complete ground up restoration. Thankfully the 356 had been meticulous cared for over the years, and once stripped down to metal it was found to be clear of rust, and completely accident free. The car was painted in its original light ivory and the interior redone in the original red leatherette.

Once the car was finished, and looked just like the day it was delivered from Porsche 44 years earlier, the reality of having his father’s 356 back in his hands proved to much emotionally for Eric to bear. He would sell the family heirloom after only driving it briefly. Jack Brauer of Oceanside, CA would become the cars new custodian in 2010. Over the next 4 years he would have John Chambers Motosports of Leucadia, CA care for the car.

Now at Canepa this very special car has been fully mechanically inspected and serviced. Even with only a couple of thousand miles since its full restoration we have invested over 100 hours into a complete concours detail ensuring that this 356SC shows as well as it drives. Bruce considers this car to be the best restored, original 356 SC coupe he has ever seen. Owned by a friend of Bruce Canepa whos collection consisted of some of the finest collectible Porsches, this 356SC will fit itself nicely within any Porsche collection.
