1972 Porsche 911 RSR Recreation
VIN: 9112102413
In late 1972 the Porsche RS road car and its racing cousin the RSR took the world by storm. In fact Porsche ended up tripling the original homologation production number of 500 to over 1500. This popularity and exclusivity ushered in a wave of recreations that would last for decades. Originally you could recreate the car simply by calling Porsche and ordering all the factory parts. As these part supplies either dried up or became incredibly expensive, cheap alternatives began hitting the market resulting in some poor quality clones. However, once in a while, an owner pulls all the stops and builds a recreation that truly pays homage to the original.
In October of 2001 this build began, and Rick DeMan of DeMan Motorsport was hired to realize the vision. DeMan is one of the more respected Porsche specialists in the North East and known for some incredible custom builds. The goal was to build a recreation of the legendary RSR using a blend of rare factory original parts, as well as upgrades as if the factory were to recreate their own car 30-years later.
The foundation of the build was a very dry and straight 1972 911 T chassis that was stripped down to the bare metal and showed no signs of abuse or damage. A low mile RS America had recently come into Rick's shop to be turned into a 1,000hp track monster and its original engine was used for this build. The 3.6 liter motor was completely rebuilt to stock, 247 horsepower specifications.
The suspension is all factory RSR. The interior was terrifically executed using correct factory perlon carpet, a NOS factory 1973 911 dash with new speaker grill, and factory 1973 leather sport seats with double locker/tilt bases. The details on the car are astonishing all the way down to the factory RS fuel tank and factory steel flares.
Shortly after finishing the car in 2004, the owner decided to sell it. It was then purchased by a collector in California who simply added it to his museum and rarely drove it. On June 20th, 2007, another California owner purchased the car looking to actually use it. This owner is a long-time Porsche enthusiast who has an affinity for quality sport purpose Porsche 911s with a R Gruppe flare.
This owner was a personal friend of Hayden Burvill, owner of Windrush Evolution (WEVO). Hayden is an engineer/builder who truly understands the intricacies of these cars, and for the next several years WEVO further developed this RSR, extracting its full potential. From fine-tuning the mechanical components to finishing off the cosmetics, nothing was over-looked.
Harvey Weidman (one of the most respected restorers of Porsche wheels in the world) restored the factory RSA Fuchs, which are wrapped in Michelin TB15 tires. The 917/930 brakes were restored and have fresh pads and rotors.
Countless hours were invested making sure every detail was attended to including perfect panel fit and spotless paintwork. In total over $150,000 has been invested in the build, all documented by a host of receipts. The end result is a high-level recreation/interpretation of the legendary RSR with a keen eye to the details, excellent use of rare factory parts, and reliable modern power.
