In 1974 Porsche released upon the world via the Paris Auto Show one of the most iconic variants of the 911 ever created: the 911 Turbo. Turbo cars designated with “930”, Porsche began experimenting with turbocharged technology in their late 60s and early 70s racing career in notable cars such as the Porsche 917/10 and 917/30. In order to homologate the new turbocharged race cars, 934, 934.5 and later the 935, Porsche brought a piece of the racing action to the streets for those wanting some extra power from their air-cooled vehicles. Since then, the “930” Turbo is one of the most sought-after air-cooled Porsches, combining power, aggressive styling, and a rewarding driving experience. 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the iconic and legendary Porsche icon, reaching critical acclaim across the world as one of the all-time greatest sports cars.
This 1977 Porsche 911 Turbo was delivered to its first and only owner on June 3rd, 1977 by Allan Porsche Audi of Burbank, California. On its original window sticker the 930 was optioned with a Limited Slip Differential, Sports Seats, and an Electric Sliding Roof. A black genuine leather interior was specified as part of standard options, along with a long list of standard features afforded to the 911 Turbo. In June of 1977, the car had a window sticker price of $29,949.50, equivalent to over $150,000 in 2024! With only 727 examples of the 911 Turbo produced for the U.S. 1977 model year, it was an exceptionally rare vehicle to see on the streets.
The sole owner of this 911 Turbo kept a collection that eventually reached 80 vehicles strong, keeping only the most exquisite cars as a part of the longtime collection in California. Drove sparingly, the car only amassed 4,351 miles over the past 47 years, taken out occasionally but warmed up and moved in order to keep things moving the way they should be. In 2012 the Turbo’s engine was treated to a comprehensive freshening that included resealing the entire case according to Porsche Factory requirements, while also replacing items such as various bushings, checking engine timing and valve clearances, replacing rubber parts such as oil lines, after which the car received a clean bill of health. During this time the brake system was bled and the fuel tank was inspected. Later that year the front and rear brake caliper seals were replaced, the system bled, and the shift coupler replaced.
The car remained in the collection for another 12 years before emerging again and returning to the same facility that carried out the original engine freshening. In 2024 the Turbo received additional service, replacing items that were ready to be freshened. These included the steering shaft bushing, rear brake hoses, flushing the brake system, front hood struts, ignition cut off relay, alternator restoration, repairing radio antenna operation, recharging the air condition system, restoring correct throttle operation, and 4 new Pirelli P7 tires mounted and balanced.
Shortly after the 911 Turbo arrived at Canepa, the car was given a thorough inspection inside and out as a part of the “Canepa Difference”. The car was deemed to be in excellent condition, but Canepa is known for taking cars to the next level. The Turbo was extensively cleaned underneath to remove the original cosmoline applied for transport across the Atlantic, revealing the factory surfaces underneath completely intact and in excellent condition. It was then brought to Canepa’s mechanical department, where it was decided that lowering the Turbo to European specification would not only increase the visual appeal of the car, but the handling as well. After being adjusted to the correct levels, the 930 now has a menacing stance that was standard on all European-delivered cars. A complete detail inside and out was performed last, ensuring the all-original leather interior was preserved and the exterior Silver Metallic paint polished to a show-worthy shine.

About the Porsche 930
Porsche began experimenting with turbocharging technology on their race cars during the late 1960s, and in 1972 began development on a turbocharged version of the 911. Porsche originally needed to produce the car in order to comply with homologation regulations and had intended on marketing it as a street legal race vehicle like the 1973 Carrera 2.7 RS. When the homologation rules changed, Porsche continued to develop the car anyway, deciding to make it a fully equipped variant of the 911 that would top the model range and give Porsche a more direct competitor to vehicles from Ferrari and Lamborghini.
Although Porsche no longer needed the car to meet homologation requirements, it proved a viable platform for racing vehicles, and became the basis for the 934 and 935 race cars. Ferdinand "Ferry" Porsche, who was running the company at the time, handed development of the vehicle over to Ernst Fuhrmann, who adapted the turbo-technology originally developed for the 917/30 Can-Am car to the 3.0 litre flat-six from the Carrera RS 3.0, creating what Porsche internally dubbed as 930.
Total output from the engine was 256 hp, significantly more than the standard Carrera. In order to ensure that the platform could make the most of the higher power output, a revised suspension, larger brakes and stronger gearbox became part of the package. A "whale tail" rear spoiler was installed to help vent more air to the engine and help create more downforce at the rear of the vehicle, and wider rear wheels with upgraded tires combined with flared wheel arches were added to increase the 911's width and grip, making it more stable at speed.
Porsche badged the vehicle simply as "Turbo" (although early U.S. units were badged as "Turbo Carrera") and debuted it at the Paris Auto Show in October 1974 before putting it on sale in the spring of 1975; export to the United States began in 1976.
