Coming from humble beginnings as a small repair shop in Germany, RUF today is known as one of the foremost tuners and manufacturers of specialized vehicles based on Porsches. In 1974, Alois Ruf’s father had just passed and the young German took the reins of the company. With a keen interest in sports cars from Zuffenhausen, especially the Porsche 911, RUF built their first car in 1975. From there, the German shop progressed steadily over the years with different upgrades and builds bringing us to the present day, where RUF is now manufacturing a carbon-fiber car that looks like a 911, but has no chassis components or really any parts from a 911. RUF is most famous for their CTR “Yellowbird”, a turbocharged 500hp monster that went around the iconic Nürburgring in a highly-watched video production. While this turbocharged sibling seems to get all of the attention, Ruf has also created a series of cars based on the 964 platform: the Ruf RCT.
The Ruf RCT began from Alois looking towards the future and beginning to look to the next platform from Porsche as his sports car canvas. While building BRT cars, Ruf had compiled an impressive spares collection from 964s. Instead of letting these valuable pieces go to waste, Ruf decided to create the next turbocharged car, the RCT. Standing for Ruf Carrera Turbo, the cars were originally built from 1992 to 1994. Offered in either narrow or wide body depending on a client’s wishes, a stock naturally aspirated Porsche 964 was transformed into a turbo-charged monster. The RCT engine package boosted the stock Porsche 964’s engine from a civilian-like 270 horsepower to 385 horsepower and 395 lb/ft of torque, a substantial upgrade for the air-cooled engine. Along with improved suspension, upgraded interiors, integrated roll cages, and improved aerodynamics, the Ruf RCT was a winning combination of performance and value for customers.
As Porsche’s new 993 platform went public for the world to enjoy, Ruf again took stock of what components they used and decided to use the revised cylinder head from the 993 and begin placing them on RCT engines, dubbing these new upgraded engines “EVO”s with 425hp and 420lb/ft of torque. This upgrade proved to be so popular that Ruf, to this day, still offers this upgrade for clients.
This example of the Ruf RCT began its life at Ruf first being built and completed in May of 1994. In 2020, the RCT’s previous owner requested that Ruf upgrade the car to EVO specification, increasing the horsepower to 425hp and 420 lb/ft of torque. During this time, the car also received a freshing of other mechanical items such as the transmission being rebuilt, along with the brake calipers, new Ruf wheels painted, and other items related to the engine upgrade. In total, the owner paid over $60,000 in upgrading the car to EVO specification.
When the RCT arrived at Canepa, it was apparent that the car had been maintained to the highest level its entire life. If you were told that it was built in 1994, you would likely not believe it. Despite its condition, Canepa still performed the Canepa Difference process on the car to confirm both its mechanical and cosmetic condition. Mechanically sorted, the car was treated to a full detailing and polishing regime, using only foam pads to polish the deep green paint finish. With the black leather interior in fantastic condition, driving dynamics fully sorted, and the Connaught Green paintwork boasting a deep sheen, this Ruf RCT EVO is an ideal candidate for a collector, a Ruf connoisseur, or a driver looking for a serious sports car with Ruf history.
