2003 Hummer H2 Canepa Design
VIN: 5GRGN23U63H100909
Before Canepa was a global leader in collectable cars we were a global leader in custom SUVs. As Canepa Design we built over 1500 custom vehicles for discerning buyers from the 1990s to the early 2000s. We also would build concept and show vehicles for different manufactures including General Motors. This H2 is one of those hand-built show vehicles.
Presented at the GM stand at SEMA in November of 2002, this Hummer showcased everything that Canepa Design was innovating at the time. The build began in July of 2002 when this H2 was delivered directly from GM to Canepa Design. This H2 was one of the first production H2s to be built by GM, and in less than 4 months it would undergo a complete custom transformation.
The H2 was disassembled and build back up as only a professional racecar driver and customizer could. The Vortec 6-liter V8 engine was upgraded with a polished Magnuson Radix supercharger putting out 125 more horsepower and 125 more ft/lbs of torque. The brakes were upgraded to 6-piston AP Racing calipers with huge drilled rotors and stainless steel brake hoses. To make room for the brakes the stock 17 inch wheels were set aside for a set of custom Boyd Coddington 18 inch alloy rims shod with Toyo 325/65/R18 tires all around. The suspension was upgraded with gas shocks.
On the exterior the body was painted Mercedes silver, with matte silver being applied to the grille, bumpers, flares, mirrors, vents, and door handle bezels. All of the lenses were smoke tinted. The Hummer logo on the rear bumper was inset with custom polished stainless steel letters. The tow hooks were chromed, and stainless hardware was used throughout. A flip-out billet anodized aluminum gas filler door was installed. The truck sports a full-length step that automatically extends down when any one of the vehicle’s doors open - when the doors close the step retracts automatically, retaining original ground clearance.
The interior of the H2 is just as stunning as its exterior. On the dash Canepa grafted on the air vents from an Audi TT. Special leather was made just for this build. It was embossed with the diamond plate pattern often found on the exterior of 4x4s and is found on the seats, door panels, dash, and center console. The third row seat was removed and the second row relocated 6" back for increased legroom. The doorsills are brushed aluminum. On the back of the front seat headrests are lcd TV screens with wireless headsets for rear seat entertainment. All the lower door panels storage pocket enclosures were carpeted.
When all was said and done the Canepa H2 stole the show at SEMA in 2002, and one of its highest accolades was the from Hummer Division's General Manager, Mike DiGiovanni, who singled out the Canepa Hummer as his personal favorite. The show truck was later sold to a private owner in January of 2003, and it has been in her meticulous care ever since. For the past 14 years the H2 has only been maintained by a GM dealer or by our own mechanics here at Canepa, and all the records come with the truck.
The driving experience of a Canepa Design truck is second to none, and is certainly the closest a truck this size could ever come to being a sportscar - with tremendous grunt, adept handling, and shockingly effective brakes. If have ever longed for a H2, this is the truck to own - and drive.
