OVERVIEW

1990 Porsche 962C Team Trust
VIN: 962-170

Ordered by the Japanese racing team, Trust, 962-170 was constructed by Porsche as a complete rolling chassis, built by the factory to FIA World Sportscar Championship configuration. After its completion it was sent to Japan in 1991. The motor, 956 358, was sent on separately as it cost considerably less with regards to customs duty for importation. This was and still is a common practice. Motor 956 358 was a new turbo 3.2 liter 962 motor in latest and last Porsche factory specification.

962-170 was used by the Trust team for testing only, and had only a few hours of track time. Since it was a test car and not subject to the rigors of racing it was not modified or damaged in any way.

962-170 is the most original, period correct 962 in the world today.

This 962 underwent a complete restoration and race preparation by Canepa. Starting from the bare tub, the entire car was gone through both cosmetically and mechanically. It is now fully sorted, track tested, and race ready. The condition is as close as you can get to a brand new Porsche 962.

To show 962-170’s immense capability and competitiveness it was driven by Bruce Canepa in the 2015 Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunion, and the 2015 Porsche Rennsport Reunion V.

At the Rolex, 962-170 was entered in Class 7A (FIA/IMSA, GTP, GTO) running against cars like the Mazda 767-B, Acura Spice, and other 962s. It would dominate the field with a 1st place finish and fastest lap.

At Rennsport a few weeks later 962-170 would be met with significantly different competition running in Group 6 - the Stuttgart Cup. Surrounded by a host of much newer Porsche RS Spyders, and period 962s, 962-170 would qualify 2nd fastest in the field. In the main event the 962 would leap out to the front and hold off the championship DHL RS Spyder driven by Jeroen Bleekemolen for three laps. The two cars would be leading the rest of the field by over half a lap at mid-race. Behind 962-170 would be the RS Spyder of Cooper MacNeil, the 962 of Patrick Long, and the RS Spyder of David Donahue.

Point proven and back home at Canepa, 962-170 is once again concours prepared and race ready. Absolutely stunning, it is equally at home on the racetrack or in a museum. This 962 is eligible for historic events worldwide, and has its current HMSA log book.

The Porsche 962 (also known as the 962C in international competition) was a sports-prototype racing car built by Porsche as a replacement for the 956 and designed to mainly to comply with IMSA's GTP regulations, although it would later compete in the European Group C formula as the 956 had. The 962 was introduced at the end of 1984, from which it quickly became successful through privateer owners while having a remarkably long-lived career, with some examples still proving competitive into the mid-1990s.To make the 956 eligible under the new rules, Porsche redesigned the chassis to move the drivers feet behind the centerline of the front wheels. A steel roll cage was also integrated into the aluminum monocoque chassis.

The newer Andial built 3.2L fuel injected Flat-6 would be placed in the 962 by the middle of 1985 for IMSA competition, which made the car more competitive against Jaguar. However it would not be until 1986 that the 2.6L unit from the 956 was replaced in the World Sportscar Championship, using 2.8L, 3.0L, and 3.2L variants with dual turbochargers. The cars run under World Sportscar Championship regulations were designated as 962C to separate them from their IMSA GTP counterparts. The 3.2L unit, which had been eligible under IMSA's Group 3 engine rules was banned in IMSA by 1987. In 1988, to counteract against the factory Nissans and the threat of withdrawal from Porsche teams, watercooled twin turbo Porsche engines would be allowed back but with 36mm restrictors.
