1993 Porsche 964 RS 3.8
VIN: WP0ZZZ96ZPS497083
In 1993 Porsche released an even more extreme version of its 964 Carrera RS. While the RS of 1992 was relatively restrained in appearance, the 3.8-litre version featured the wide-body look of the 964 Turbo, a massive rear spoiler (compared to its predecessor without), as well as three-piece Speedline wheels. The RS 3.8 was no longer a wolf in sheep’s clothing, but an outright wolf. Ultimately, only 55 examples of this exceptionally rare RS 3.8 would be built.
This example was originally sold to an owner in Japan. It would enter into a Japanese dealer’s private collection before being brought into the United States in June of 2016. The car was shipped from Nagoya to Long Beach where it was imported under a Show or Display exemption granted by the DOT/EPA.
When the new US owner took possession of the car he immediately gave the car a full engine-out service that included an oil change, fuel filter, belt, spark plugs, plug wires, clutch disc, and pressure plate. They also did the spring plates in the rear, leak down test, and converted the rockers to Pauter Machine billet rockers (the original RSR style rockers are with the car, but those are impractical for street use due to the complexity of valve adjustments.) Finally they did brake rotors, brake pads, brake pad wear sensors and full system bleed. Tires are brand new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2, with less than 100 miles on them.
Since arriving at Canepa the 3.8 has been treated to our Canepa Difference process, which includes a complete concours detail and full mechanical inspection. We are installing all new factory struts and springs, and are setting the car to the factory specified ride height, as well as performing a digital 4-wheel alignment.
During our inspection we found this car to be absolutely free of any corrosion. From the smallest bolt to largest plated surface this 3.8 is amazingly preserved. The previous owners were obviously very meticulous and careful during their ownership. The current condition is more like that of 5000-mile car that was driven very conservatively, and with our additional efforts this 3.8 now presents like new.
About the RS 3.8
In 1993 the racing department in Weissach-Flact hand built a very limited run of 911 Carrera RS 3.8 road cars. It is believed that only 55 street versions were made. Visually, it was immediately recognizable by its wide turbo bodywork, unique front corner spoilers and rear biplane wing. The engine lid was made as a single piece with the six-position adjustable rear wing. To reduce weight, the doors and the hood were made of aluminum. Side and rear windows were of thin-gauge glass. The interior offered only the barest driving necessities: no airbags, no rear seats, no rear side trim, but instead leather covered sport bucket seats, race steering wheel, and lightweight inner door panels.
At the rear was the 3.8 liter boxer engine hand built by the racing department. Output was 300hp and 266 ft/lb of torque. The displacement increase was obtained by use of 102mm cylinder bores. The crankshaft was fitted with a torsional vibration damper. Other powertrain changes included larger pistons, lighted rocker arms, and an exhaust system with reduced backpressure. The induction system was fitted with six individual throttle butterflies for instant response. The Mototronic 2.10, with its hot-film mass-airflow sensor, preceded the coming changes in the 993. The suspension was tuned sportingly stiff, but with more comfort at the travel limit than the normal Carrera RS.
The front brakes, red calipers included, came from the 911 Turbo S, while the rears were borrowed from the Cup Carrera. The front axle mounted 235/40R18 tires, the rear had 285/35R18 all shod on three-piece, 18 inch Speedline rims.
