2015 Shelby GT350 R
The 2015 Shelby GT 350 R is the latest addition to The Canepa Collection – the Personal Favorites of Bruce Canepa. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 37 original 1965 Shelby Mustang G.T.350Rs, Ford released only 37 examples of the most recent embodiment of this legendary ponycar. While more will be produced in 2016, the 2015 production was strictly limited.
Driving it back from the dealership in LA, Bruce has put over 700 miles on the car so far. He says its fun every time he gets in it, and has also observed that it is comparable, if not better than, a number of high-end European cars 2-5 times its price point.
Under the hood is a 5.2-liter flat-plane crank V8, pushing 540 hp and well over 400 lb.-ft. of torque connected to a 6-speed manual transmission. Items like the trunk floorboard, carpeting, the rear seats, the backup camera and the spare tire have been removed to lighten the car. This means the GT350R is 130 lbs. lighter than the Track-Pack GT350. A larger splitter and rear wing help improve downforce, and a Torsen limited-slip differential with a 3:73 axle ratio puts the power to the ground.
The GT350R rolls on carbon-fiber wheels, a first for any major automaker and a rarity even among exotic supercars. The composite wheels—sized 19 by 11 inches up front and 19 by 11.5 out back—save an astounding 13 pounds per corner and are stiffer than any aluminum wheel. And they’re wrapped in hyper-sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires with a rubber compound and construction unique to the GT350R.
Other goodies include MagneRide suspension, driver-selectable vehicle modes, a shock-tower brace, heavy-duty front springs, an aluminum rear bumper beam, engine oil cooler, and the transmission and differential oil coolers.
